Self Isolation – Week 1

Last days at work

Its been just over a week since I’ve been at home “quarantining” but more accurately I’m actually just self isolating (as an introvert this is not a new thing for me). However, this happened sooner than I had originally planned. See I work in the tourism industry; more specifically the hotel industry. We have been indirectly hit hard by the coronavirus (COVID19). In the hotel industry is is very hard to “work from home”, as it is a service industry. So I was still going to work up until Friday the 20th. Over the course of the week I noticed how work became more like a ghost town than a lively all inclusive resort. Last year this time we had 2500 guests and in turn over 2000 team members would be at work. By midweek I saw more staff than guests as the occupancy declined. By Friday we had a few meetings to inform us on the happenings, rearranged the work schedule and a redirected focus. The rearranged work schedule halved my working days but in light of everything I was grateful and my mind was at rest. However by Saturday morning things changed. Everything was now out the window as I was informed that the hotel would be officially closing in the coming week and that most employees would be effectively laid off. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to know that this would be the inevitable. People are now afraid to travel, and that in turn has crippled the travel and hospitality industry.

Week 1 of Isolation

Well, now that I have all the time in the world. I started off this self isolation period by catching up on sleep, as I have been extremely tired and suffering from restless nights. I’ve been cooking a lot… and eating right around the clock.  I mostly end up sleeping, watching vlogs on youtube, searching for good Netflix shows and trying not to let my anxiety take over.

Right now I’m just trying to stay safe, only going out once a week to buy whatever groceries I need and coming back home. I’m avoiding watching the news as much as possible as I’ve realized that it is making me more anxious about everything that is going on.

I’m finding it hard to change my wake up time from 6:20am. So Ive kept my alarm and get up by 6:30 to walk the neighborhood (I’ve yet to become consistent). The only thing consistent these day is sleeping, feeding my dogs and feeding myself.

So far Jamaica has had 35 confined cases of COVID-19 with 1 death. But only just about 300 people have been tested. The Government of Jamaica has been diligent with the dissemination of information and has not acted as slow as other nations. Jamaica has not entered lockdown phase as yet.
